Biography

Siyun Pan is a MA student of East Asian Studies who is interested in contemporary Chinese media, popular culture, and fandom. She is interested in exploring the many practices adopted by the colossal fandom of celebrities on major social media platforms such as Weibo and Douban. Using the ethnographical approach, she conducts in-depth interviews with fans from different online communities, and locates the surprisingly well-organized internal structure with the overwhelming narrative of neoliberal governmentality in China today. She is also seeking to localize and materialize fan culture in China, particularly how fandom and celebrity culture mediates the reimagination and visualization of the urban landscape in China.
