Biography

Philip Mason is a historian whose focus is on the interrelationship between the transpersonal and secular in political structures of premodern Japan. His work is built around questions of mind in historiographical interpretation, deploying a theoretical framework which leverages phenomenology and cognitive science in addition to classical and post-modern historiography. This approach has allowed him to engage with a diverse field of study, teaching Buddhist Psychology within New College's Buddhism and Mental Health program, as well as samurai culture in the Department of East Asian Studies.
