Japanese Language Courses in 2025-2026

EAS151H1 and EAS152H are not eligible for the CR/NCR option.

Auditing is not available for all Japanese courses.
Step 1: Submit Level Check A. This is a requirement.
Step 2:

If Level Check A indicates that you must take the placement interview and test, register for the interview and test.

If the Level Check A result indicates you don’t need to take the placement interview and test, submit the Japanese Course Enrolment Request Form to enrol in EAS151H1.

Students who completed a prerequisite course between Fall 2024 and Winter 2025 and achieved the required grade:

Graduate students from within and outside the department who need knowledge of Japanese for their research may take a Japanese course with the approval of EAS. To request enrolment, please submit the Language Course Add/Drop Request Form (The link will be available in July 2025.) for Graduate Students and register for the placement interview. If placed in a course, you will be enrolled in a graduate course code though the credit does not normally count towards graduate programs. The course is graded as credit/non-credit (CR/NCR); 70% or above is required for a CR. Auditing is not an option.

1. Japanese Course Enrolment Instructions
Students must submit the Japanese Course Enrolment Request Form in order to request enrollment in a Japanese language course. Direct enrollment through ACORN for any Japanese Language course is NOT available.
Enrolment Request Form Acceptance Periods (Prerequisite required.)
Please note that enrolment priority is based around year of study and program. Enrolling in an EAS program on ACORN solely for the purpose of gaining priority is not allowed. EAS minor students do not receive priority due to the Minor not containing a language requirement.
4th/5th Year (14.0+ credits): Starts on July 7, at 9 am
3rd Year (9.0 – 13.5 credits): Starts on July 9, at 9 am
2nd Year (4.0 – 8.5 credits): Starts on July 14, at 9 am
4th/5th Year (14.0+ credits): Starts on July 7, at 9 am
2nd Year (4.0 – 8.5 credits): Starts on July 14, at 9 am
3rd Year (9.0 – 13.5 credits): Starts on July 9, at 9 am
Starts on July 17, at 9 am
4th/5th Year (14.0+ credits): Starts on July 7, at 9 am

Enrolment Process
The Department of East Asian Studies will manually enroll students in the course/section they requested.

Timeline:

By the end of the first week after you submit your Enrolment Request Form: You will receive an email from the EAS administrative officer regarding your course enrolment. You must respond immediately. Failure to respond in a timely manner may impact your ability to be enrolled in the course.

In the following week after you receive an email from the Department: Your enrolment is complete, or you will be added to the Department course waitlist.

Enrolment order is determined by the Japanese Course Enrollment Request Form submissions. Please remember that spaces available in each course/section are limited.

The department reserves the right to remove students from Japanese courses at any time of the academic year if it turns out they have intentionally underperformed their Japanese skills during the screening process.

2. Placement Interview & Test

You may take the placement interview & test either in May or August for all Japanese courses, and in December for EAS152H1, EAS253H1, and EAS453H1. However, those who took the prerequisite course in the 2024-2025 academic year are not allowed to take the May Placement Interview & Test.

Placement in a course does not guarantee a spot. Enrollment is based on the submission order of Japanese Course Enrolment Request Form. Those who received their placement in May have a higher chance of securing a spot.

Those who took the May Test are not allowed to take the August Test. However, those who took the August Test but did not receive a placement may take the December Test.

You must submit Level Check B (and Level C, if instructed upon your submission of Level Check B) before registering for the interview & test.
- Registration Period: April 10, 2025, at 9 am – April 23, 2025, at 5 pm.
- Please submit May Placement Interview & Test Registration Form. Your score(s) on Level Check B (and C, if applicable) will be required for registration.
- You will receive an email containing instructions for signing up for the placement interview within a few days after the registration period ends on April 23, 2025. Please remember to check your email regularly. Failure to sign up for the interview will result in the cancellation of your placement test registration.
- Interview Sign-up Period: April 25 – April 29, 2025
- Interview: May 1 & 2, 2025
- Test: May 7, 2025, 10am - 12pm
- Results: You will receive an email on May 12, 2025.
- Registration Period: July 14, 2025, at 9 am – July 25, 2025, at 5 pm.
- Please submit August Placement Interview & Test Registration Form. Your score(s) on Level Check B (and C, if applicable) will be required for registration.
- You will receive an email containing instructions for signing up for the placement interview within a few days after the registration period ends on July 25, 2025. Please remember to check your email regularly. Failure to sign up for the interview will result in the cancellation of your placement test registration.
- Interview Sign-up Period: July 29 – August 1, 2025
- Interview: August 5 – 8, 2025 (Tentative)
- Test: August 12, 2025, 10am - 12pm
- Results: You will receive an email on August 15, 2025.
- Note: You may not submit your Japanese Course Enrolment Request Form before your placement results are published.
- Registration Period: November 12, 2025, at 9 am – November 24, 2025, at 5 pm.
- Please submit December Placement Interview & Test Registration Form. Your score(s) on Level Check B (and C, if applicable) will be required for registration.
- You will receive an email containing instructions for signing up for the placement interview within a few days after the registration period ends on November 24, 2025. Please remember to check your email regularly. Failure to sign up for the interview will result in the cancellation of your placement test registration.
- Interview Sign-up Period: November 27 – December 1, 2025
- Interview: December 3 & 4 (Tentative)
- Test: December 9, 2025, 10am - 12pm
- Results: You will receive an email on December 12, 2025.
- Note: You may not submit your Japanese Course Enrolment Request Form before your placement results are published.
