50 Years of Teaching: Professor Falkenheim celebrated

June 28, 2022 by Chan Leung

A group of former graduate students of Dr Victor Falkenheim, Professor emeritus of Political Science and East Asian Studies, organized a celebration at the Faculty Club of the University of Toronto, to commemorate his fiftieth year teaching and serving the university community. Generously co-sponsored by the Departments of Political Science and East Asian Studies, as well as the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy, the event was held on the Friday evening of 27 May 2022.

Dozens of former and current colleagues, students and friends showed up to cheer on Professor Falkenheim and his family. Fond memories of experience working with or studying under him, messages of greetings and congratulations from those who could not attend because of distance or schedule conflicts were read out, and presentation of recently published works by Professor Falkenheim’s former students were made. Over cocktails and snacks, and under a relaxing light breeze, participants enjoyed a wonderful evening at the Faculty Club’s patio, recalling Professor Falkenheim’s illustrious academic career and professional accomplishments. These included serving as chairman of both the Departments of Political Science and East Asian Studies, as well as director of the Joint Center on Chinese and East Asian Studies of York University and U of T.

For students like us fortunate enough to benefit from his tireless teaching and mentoring, we cherish this precious opportunity to express our heartfelt gratitude to Professor Falkenheim! We also like to thank Professor Bernard Frolic of York University for delivering the key-note speech, Professor Alfred Chan of Western University for masterful MC-ing of the event, as well as all participants for making the evening such a memorable, endearing experience!
