Biography :

Jessica Morgan-Brown’s research focuses on the effects of global imperialism(s) on language, focusing particularly on the Korean peninsula in the first half of the 20th century. Morgan-Brown uses the concepts of translanguaging and linguistic register as frameworks through which to look at the common mixed script and mixed language writing practices of authors in colonial Korea. She is also interested in the mythology of han’gŭl and the debates surrounding its standardization during this same time period. For her dissertation project, she is doing an in depth investigation of language in the works of Ch’oe Hyŏnbae(최현배), Pak Sŭngbin (박승빈), Choi Chŏnghŭi (최정희), Kim Saryang (김사량), Mirok Li (이미륵), Younghill Kang (강영흘), Seu Ring Hai (서영해), Dan Tirinaro/Jŏng Sa-sŏp (정사섭), Ĝong Mun ĝu/Hŏ Jŏng-suk (허정숙), and Im Ĉol Aj/Im Ch’ŏl-ae (임철애).
