Qi Hong

Qi Hong

First Name:
Qi
Last Name:
Hong
Title:
PhD Candidate
Biography :

Qi Hong works on the intellectual and cultural history and the history of science in late imperial and modern China (19-20th centuries). They are also affiliated with the Book History and Print Culture (BHPC) collaborative program. Their dissertation examines the historical epistemology of linguistic thoughts and speech sciences in China. By tracing linguistic and philological debates throughout the late Qing and Republican eras, this project teases out the formation of disciplinary boundaries, the transnational network of knowledge production, and the entanglement of science and politics.

Beyond the dissertation, Qi's research spans the history of speech technologies (esp. automatic speech recognition / ASR) and computational linguistics (esp. NLP and machine translation / MT) in the context of the Cold War. She also pursues personal interests in the histories of speech pathology and clinical nutrition in the socialist world. Outside the archive, she can be found in the pool or the ring.
