University of Toronto Funding Package 

The Department of East Asian Studies provides doctoral-stream students with a base funding package for Years 1-5 of their doctoral studies. See How Graduate Funding Works

For the 2023-24 academic year, the minimum package is $28,555 (base amount of $20,500 plus tuition and fees of $8055). 

The package is designed to cover a student’s tuition and incidental fees and provide the student with $20,500 base funding. This funding package may be made up from a variety of sources including external awards such as SSHRC and OGS scholarships, U of T Fellowships, research assistantships and teaching assistantships (up to $7,755 of TA income can be included in the funding package).

Students are encouraged, and required, to apply for external scholarships. Students with external scholarships receive higher funding packages and, in some cases, are relieved of the Teaching Assistant component of the funding package. PhD Tuition

Domestic International

  • 2023-24 = $8,213.96 (Downtown Toronto/St. George campus, incl. incidental, system access and ancillary fees) 

  • 2023-24 = $8,969.96 including UHIP (Downtown Toronto/St. George campus, incl. incidental, system access and ancillary fees and health insurance plan fees) 

 

Note: Students on program extensions (beyond Year 6) pay Program Extension Fees, which are half of regular tuition. Students in Year 6 (6 & 7 for direct-entry PhD students) pay full tuition but are eligible for the Doctoral Completion Award.

TAships

Teaching assistantships not only provide valuable professional experience, but also serve as an important source of funding and form a component of a typical U of T funding package.

Conditions of work and rates of remuneration are governed by a collective agreement negotiated between the University and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE).
