The Department of East Asian Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a three-year Contractually Limited Term Appointment (CLTA) in the area of Japanese Language. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream, and is expected to begin on July 1, 2021, or shortly thereafter, and end on June 30, 2024. An additional two-year renewal may be possible.

Applicants must have earned at least an MA degree in Japanese language education or a related field by the time of appointment. Native or near native fluency in Japanese is expected together with an excellent command of English. We seek candidates whose teaching interests complement and enhance existing departmental strengths. Candidates must demonstrate expertise in curriculum development, lecture preparation and delivery, and teaching Japanese as a second/foreign language in a degree granting program at the undergraduate level. Familiarity with North America pedagogical approaches is an asset. Experience in developing and delivering online materials/lectures and teaching all levels of Japanese is required. Additionally, candidates must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellent pedagogical practices and a demonstrated interest in teaching-related scholarly activities.

Evidence of excellence in teaching and pedagogical inquiry can be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, awards and accolades, presentations at significant conferences, a strong statement of teaching philosophy, and the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application including sample syllabi, sample lesson plans for different levels of teaching, links to videos of sample teaching, sample course materials, and teaching evaluations, as well as strong letters of reference from referees of high standing.

Candidates are also expected to show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment demonstrated through the application materials.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The successful candidate will teach courses in the Japanese language (at any assigned undergraduate level) and assist with other activities in the Japanese Language Program.
