Japanese Course Enrolment Instructions 2015-2016

For your own registration process, please see the instructions specific to your student category. Please check this website again in the new year in order to confirm your enrolment procedures. The below procedures are subject to change.

**Please note that enrolment for 2014-2015 is closed with the exception of those hoping to take EAS121H1S Japanese I for Students with Prior Background. If you have not already been placed in the course via a placement test in April or September, you must take the December placement test in order to enrol in to the course. The information about the placement test can be found at the bottom of this page.

RETURNING STUDENTS

Returning students with no background:
Please enroll, or add yourself onto the waitlist for, EAS120Y1 and a tutorial section via ROSI as soon as you are able to. The course is a P* courses with priorities for first-year students and EAS students. First-year students and returning EAS students will be able to register during the priority enrolment period. If you are in those categories, and the course is full when you try to enrol, waitlists open on August 8 at 6 am. Enrolment will open to other students on August 13 at 6 am EDT. If you are unsure if you should take EAS120Y1 or EAS121H1, please use the “self checklist.” A mandatory online EAS120Y Screening Form must be submitted by August 25, 2015 or you will be removed from the course. The form will be available here on July 15.  No placement test required.

Returning students with the minimum grade in the prerequisite wishing to take EAS220Y1, EAS320Y1, EAS460H1 or EAS461H1:
EAS Majors/Specialists: Please enroll or add yourself onto the waitlist via ROSI as soon as you are able to.
Non-EAS majors/specialists should enroll through the department. The Japanese Enrolment Form will be available on July 15 and is due August 14. Submit your form as soon as possible since enrolments will be processed according to the date/time the form was received online. You will be added to the course or the departmental waitlist for the course by the department between August 15 and 18. Please ensure that there is a space available in your course load for the course. Failure to do so will jeopardize your placement in the course. For students with the prerequisite, no placement test is required.

Returning students who failed to reach the minimum grade in the prerequisite wishing to take EAS220Y1, EAS320Y1, EAS460H1 or EAS461H1:
EAS Majors/Specialists: Please enroll or add yourself onto the waitlist via ROSI as soon as you are able to. You must also register for the early September placement test (see below for details). If you do not pass the placement test, you will be removed from the course.
Non-EAS Majors/Specialists: You must register for the early September placement test (see below for details). If you pass the placement test, you will be registered for the course, space permitting, or added to the waitlist by the department after the test. You do not need to also submit a Japanese Enrolment Form.

Returning students with background (informal or formal study of Japanese) but without the prerequisite:
Returning students with background must write the mandatory placement test in April (April test details will be posted below at a later date). EAS Majors/Specialists who attended the April placement test and have been placed in a course: Please enroll or add yourself onto the waitlist via ROSI as soon as you are able to. Non-EAS Majors/Specialists should enroll through the department. The Japanese Enrolment Form will be available on July 15 and is due in mid-August (exact date TBA). Submit your form as soon as possible since enrolments will be processed according to the date/time the form was received online. You will be added to the course or the departmental waitlist for the course by the department (the date on which your enrolment will be processed will be posted here). Please ensure that there is a space available in your course load for the course. Failure to do so will jeopardize your placement in the course. 

INCOMING STUDENTS

Incoming students with no background:
Please enroll, or add yourself onto the waitlist for, EAS120Y1 and a tutorial section via ROSI as soon as your start time begins. If you are unsure if you should take EAS120Y1 or EAS121H1, please use the “self checklist.” After you have enrolled in the course or added yourself to the waitlist on ROSI (waitlist opens on August 8 at 6 am), you must submit a mandatory online EAS120Y Screening Form by August 25, 2015 or you will be removed from the course (the form will be available here on July 15). No placement test required. The form is available by clicking on EAS120Y Screening Form and should be completed after enrolling for the course or its waitlist on ROSI. Placements in the course are based on your enrolment on ROSI.

Incoming students with background (informal or formal study of Japanese):
Students with any background at all who might qualify for EAS121H1 (if you are unsure if you should take EAS120Y1 or EAS121H1, please use the “self checklist“) or an upper-year course must take the placement test in September. (Submit the Japanese September Placement Test Form. You do not need to also submit a Japanese Enrolment Form). After the placement test, if you are placed in EAS121H1S, the department will confirm your enrolment on ROSI. If you are not placed in EAS121H1S, you will be removed from the course. If you are placed in an upper-year course (EAS220Y, EAS320Y, or EAS461H), the department will attempt to enrol  you in the appropriate course after the placement test, space permitting, or add you to the departmental waiting list. 

PLACEMENT TEST DETAILS

December Placement Test
Students who wish to take EAS121H1S Japanese I for Students with Prior Background must take the December placement test to confirm their enrolment or to maintain their place on the waitlist. The Japanese December Placement Test Form  must be submitted online by November 30, 2014. The placement test will take place on:
Friday, December 5 10 am – noon (the location will be posted here a few days prior to the exam)

Note: Failure to be placed in EAS121H1S via a placement test will result in removal from the course.

April Placement Test
Returning students with any background who are hoping to take a Japanese language course in 2015-2016 must take the placement test in April 2015. Registration instructions will be posted here closer to the date of the test. The placements will be posted on this webpage after the placement test.

September Placement Test
To register for the Placement Test, please submit Japanese September Placement Test Form by August 25, 2015. Placements will be based on a time of receipt of the online form.  The Japanese Placement Test will take place in the week before classes begin. Details will be posted here. The placements will be posted on this webpage after the placement test.
