Graduate Funding

MA Applicants

If you are in the process of applying to the MA program for September, we encourage you to review our MA Tuition and Funding page. MA students do not have a guaranteed funding package, but are eligible to apply for a number of scholarships and may be considered for entrance scholarships by the admissions committee. MA students are also eligible to apply for Teaching Assistant positions.

MA applicants who are Canadian citizens and permanent residents should apply for scholarship programs such as the Canada Graduate Scholarships - Master's (Value: $17,500; Deadline: December 1) and the Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) (Value: $15,000; Deadline: March 1). Visit our Scholarships & Awards page for more information.

PhD Applicants

The Department of East Asian Studies provides a base funding package to PhD students of at least $18,000 ($20,500 in 2023-2024), plus tuition and fees per year, for five years. Many of our students receive significantly more than the base funding package thanks to successful applications to, or nominations for, external awards. More information can be found on our PhD Tuition and Funding page.

PhD applicants who are Canadian citizens and permanent residents should apply for scholarship programs such as the Canada Graduate Scholarships - Doctoral (Value: $35,000 per year for up to three years; Deadline: early October - please communicate with the department) and the Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) (Value: $15,000; Deadline: March 1). Current University of Toronto students (e.g. MA students in EAS or another department) should apply through our department by our internal deadline. For the CGS-D, if you are not a current U of T student, apply through your university, or, if you are not currently a student, apply directly to CGS. Visit our Scholarships & Awards page for more information.

Upon admission into the program, the department may nominate international applicants for the Connaught International Scholarship (a five-year scholarship that provides a $10,000 per year top-up above the base funding package). No separate application is required.
