A Creative Journey into Korean Culture: Calligraphy & Fan Workshop

October 20, 2025 by Ophelia Cheung and Tiffany Wong

On October 17, we had the pleasure of hosting a Korean Calligraphy & Fan Workshop, an afternoon filled with creativity, cultural appreciation, and warm community energy. Students gathered to learn the art of Korean brush writing and to design their own traditional hand-held fans with their name written in Korean with calligraphy style.

Generously supported by the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Toronto, each participant received a beautifully curated fan-making kit. The kits included everything needed for the experience, such as:

  • A traditional folding fan

  • Decorative tassel

  • Bookmark

  • Sticker sheet for personalizing designs

  • Wooden Korean consonant keychain for DIY decoration

  • Calligraphy practice sheets and brush tools

Right from the first stroke of ink, the room filled with calm focus. Many participants were trying Hangul calligraphy for the first time, and it was inspiring to see everyone patiently practicing with given practice sheets, adding personal touches, getting feedback from the instructor and turning their fans into unique art pieces. The joy and pride on students’ faces as they finished their designs made the experience even more rewarding.

To make the afternoon even more memorable, the Consulate also thoughtfully provided assorted Korean snacks and gifts, creating a fun cultural moment beyond the art itself. Participants enjoyed Milkis, honey-butter chips, and other treats while chatting and admiring each other's work. Guests also received Korean face masks and hand cream, adding a self-care twist to the event that everyone appreciated.

The atmosphere throughout the workshop was relaxing, friendly and welcoming. Students shared ideas, helped each other with brush strokes, exchanged stickers, and enjoyed a genuinely wholesome time creating together. It became not only an artistic experience, but also a space to unwind, connect, and celebrate culture in community.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Toronto for their generous sponsorship and thoughtful support. Their contributions from the beautifully prepared kits to the snacks and gifts made the event truly special and immersive.

Thank you as well to every student who joined us and brought your creativity and curiosity to the workshop. We look forward to hosting more cultural events and continuing to build spaces where students can explore new art forms, learn, and connect with each other.
