Japanese Course Enrolment Instructions 2019-2020
For your own registration process, please see the instructions specific to your student category. The below procedures are subject to change. In many cases, you are asked to fill in an online Google form. If you cannot access the Google Form, please see below for PDF forms and submission instructions.
RETURNING STUDENTS (this includes everyone who has taken courses at U of T prior to September 2019, including those who will still be in Year of Study 1)
Returning students with no background who wish to take EAS120Y1:
Please enroll, or add yourself onto the waitlist for, EAS120Y1 and a tutorial section via ACORN as soon as registration opens for you. The course is a P* courses with priorities for first-year students and EAS students. First-year students and returning EAS students will be able to register during the priority enrolment period. Other students will be able to enrol in the course/add yourself to the waitlist on August 3 (August 10 for UTM and UTSC students). A mandatory online EAS120Y Screening Form must be submitted by August 24, 2018 or you will be removed from the course. The Screening Form should only be filled out after you have enrolled in the course on ACORN, or added yourself to its waitlist. No placement test required. If you are unsure if you should take EAS120Y1 or EAS121H1, please use the “self checklist.” If your checklist indicates you might be qualified for EAS121H1, please take the September Placement Test (see below).
Returning students who wish to take EAS220Y1Y, EAS320Y1Y, EAS460H1S or EAS461H1F:
Returning students who wish to enrol in an upper-year Japanese course, must have achieved the minimum grade in the prerequisite or attend the April placement test and receive a placement.
EAS Majors/Specialists: Please enroll or add yourself to the waitlist via ACORN as soon as you are able to. Please note that the priority period is for EAS Specialists and Majors only. Students may not enrol in an EAS program of study on ACORN solely for the purpose of enrolling in a language course. EAS students must have priority enrolment in order to fulfill their program requirements. The department will remove students who have not taken EAS’s core courses. Non-EAS students must request enrolment in upper-level language courses via the process outlined below.
Non-EAS Majors/Specialists should enroll through the department. The Japanese Enrolment Form is due on August 13 and will be available here at July 16 at 9 am. Submit your form as soon as possible since enrolments will be processed according to the date/time the form was received online. You will be added to the course or the departmental waitlist for the course by the department between August 13-17. Please ensure that there is a space available in your course load for the course. Failure to do so will jeopardize your placement in the course.
**If you do not have the minimum grade in the prerequisite and also did not attend the April placement test, you may register for the September placement test. If there is room in the course in which you are placed, the department will enrol you in the course on ACORN after the placement test. If there is not room, we will add you to the course’s waitlist. See placement test details below.
Minimum grade in the prerequisite:
EAS220Y: EAS120Y/EAS121H 67%
EAS320Y: EAS220Y/EAS221H 70%
EAS460H/EAS461H: EAS320Y 70%
Returning students who wish to take EAS121H1S or EAS221H1S:
Returning students who wish to take EAS121H1S or EAS221H1S should sign up for and write the September placement test. The department will attempt to enrol you in the appropriate course after the placement test, space permitting, or add you to the waiting list.
Returning students who failed to reach the minimum grade in the prerequisite wishing to take EAS220Y1Y, EAS320Y1Y, ESA460H1S or EAS461H1F:
EAS Majors/Specialists: Please enroll or add yourself onto the waitlist via ACORN as soon as registration opens for you. You must also register for the September placement test (see below for details). If you do not pass the placement test, you will be removed from the course.
Non-EAS Majors/Specialists: You must register for the early September placement test (see below for details). If you pass the placement test, you will be registered for the course, space permitting, or added to the waitlist by the department after the test. You do not need to submit a Japanese Enrolment Form.
**Note that if you take EAS120Y1 in the summer 2018 session and do not meet the minimum grade you must wait until April 2019 to take the placement test.
