August 2020 Japanese Placement Test Results

**EAS120Y1 and EAS121H1 are not eligible for the CR/NCR option.

INCOMING STUDENTS

Incoming students with no/little background:

Please enrol, or add yourself onto the waitlist for, EAS120Y1 and a tutorial section via ACORN as soon as your start time begins. You must do the “Level Check for EAS120Y1.” If the Level Check for EAS120Y1 indicates that you must take the placement test, you must sign up for the August placement test. If the Level Check indicates that you may enrol in EAS120Y1 without taking the placement test, you must submit a mandatory online EAS120Y1 Screening Form after you have enrolled in the course or added yourself to the waitlist on ACORN by August 21, 2020 at the latest or you will be removed from the course.

Incoming students with background (informal or formal study of Japanese):

Students with any background must take the placement test in August. See placement test details below. If you are placed in a course (EAS121H1 or a higher level), the department will provide you with enrolment instructions along with your placement test results. Note that being placed in a course does not guarantee you a spot in the course. If you are placed in EAS120Y1, you should enrol or add yourself to the waitlist directly on ACORN. You must submit a mandatory online EAS120Y1 Screening Form after you have enrolled in the course or added yourself to the waitlist on ACORN by August 21, 2020 at the latest or you will be removed from the course.

RETURNING STUDENTS (this includes everyone who has taken courses at U of T prior to September 2020, including those who will still be in Year of Study 1)

Returning students with no/little background who wish to take EAS120Y1:

EAS120Y1 is a P* course with priorities for first-year students and EAS students. First-year students and returning EAS students will be able to register during the priority enrolment period. Other students will be able to enrol in the course/add themselves to the waitlist in early August. Please enrol, or add yourself onto the waitlist for, EAS120Y1 and a tutorial section via ACORN as soon as the course is available to you on ACORN. You must do the “Level Check for EAS120Y1.” If the Level Check for EAS120Y1 indicates that you must take the placement test, you must sign up for the June placement test.

Returning students who wish to take EAS121H1S or a higher level:

Returning students who wish to enrol in an upper-year Japanese course must have achieved the minimum grade in the prerequisite in the most recent academic year or attend the June placement test and receive a placement.

EAS Majors/Specialists: Please enrol or add yourself to the waitlist via ACORN as soon as you are able to.  Please note that the priority period is for EAS Specialists and Majors only. Students may not enrol in an EAS program of study on ACORN solely for the purpose of enrolling in a language course. EAS students must have priority enrolment in order to fulfill their program requirements. The department will remove students who have not taken any EAS core courses. Non-EAS students must request enrolment in upper-level language courses via the process outlined below.
**NOTE: If you missed the June placement test, you may register for the test taking place in late July/early August. Please see below. You will be registered in the course in which you are placed, space permitting, by the department after the interviews. If the course is full, you will be added to a waitlist maintained by the department.

Non-EAS Majors/Specialists must submit a request to be enrolled by submitting the Japanese Enrolment Form online (available here on July 15, 9 a.m. EDT). Submit your form as soon as possible since enrolments are processed according to the date/time the form is received online. You will be added to the course or the departmental waitlist for the course by the department in mid-August.
**NOTE: If you missed the June placement test, you may register for the test taking place in late July/early August. Please see below.
