Enrolment Instructions:

Important Notes
- Academic Integrity in Placement:
- The Department reserves the right to remove students from Japanese language courses at any point during the academic year if it is determined that they intentionally misrepresented their Japanese proficiency during the Level Check, screening, or Placement Interview/Test.
- Prerequisite Valid Period:
- Prerequisite course and grade: Valid only if completed and graded in the 2025–2026 academic year.
- Placement results: Past Placement Interview/Test results are not valid. You must attend the 2026 Placement Interview/Test.
- Level Check results: Only scores from your first Level Check attempt since May 2026 are valid.
- You may not request enrolment in both 100‑level courses (EAS151H1 & EAS152H1) or both 200‑level courses (EAS252H1 & EAS253H1) at the same time.
- Students enrolled in EAS151H1 and EAS252H1 will receive the enrolment instructions in class to proceed to EAS152H1 and EAS253H1, respectively, in November 2026.
- Students who completed EAS151H1S in winter 2026 must attend the Placement Interview/Test in order to request enrolment in EAS152H1.
- The CR/NCR option is not available for EAS151H1 and EAS152H1.
- You may request enrolment in both 400-level courses at the same time.
- EAS451H1 is not a prerequisite course for EAS453H1. You may enrol in EAS453H1 without having completed EAS451H1.
- The CR/NCR option is available for all Japanese language courses, with the exception of EAS151H1 and EAS152H1.
- Auditing is not permitted for any Japanese courses.
- Graduate students, both within and outside the Department, who require Japanese for their research may take a Japanese language course with the approval of the Department of East Asian Studies.
- To request enrolment, first contact the Japanese Language Program Coordinator and follow the instructions provided.
- If this is your first time applying for an EAS Japanese language course, you must register for the Placement Interview/Test, regardless of your Japanese proficiency level or previous study experience.
- Once permission is granted, submit the Language Course Enrolment Form for Graduate Students. Do not request enrolment on ACORN.
- If placed in a course, you will be enrolled under a graduate course code. The credit does not normally count toward graduate program requirements. Courses are graded on a Credit/Non‑Credit (CR/NCR) basis. A minimum grade of 70% is required to receive credit.
2. Placement Interview & Test
-
You may submit a course enrolment request on ACORN to secure a space and submit the Screening Form to the Department at the same time you register for the Placement Interview/Test. Your request will be processed only after your Placement Interview/Test results are released. If you are placed in a different course based on the results, you must cancel your original request and submit a new one.
-
You may take the Placement Interview/Test in August 2026 for all Japanese language courses, including S courses, and in December 2026 for EAS152H1, EAS253H1, and EAS453H1.
-
You must submit Level Check B (and Level Check C, if instructed after submitting Level Check B) before registering for the Placement Interview/Test.
