Graduate Funding & Scholarships
The Department of East Asian Studies guarantees financial support packages to PhD students of at least $15,000 plus tuition and fees per year for five years. International (“visa”) students will be provided with additional funding to cover the international fee differential and UHIP (Health Insurance). This funding package may be made up from a variety of sources including external awards such as SSHRC and OGS scholarships, research assistantships, teaching assistantships and other U of T funding. Students must maintain good standing in their programs and apply every year for major external awards (i.e. OGS & SSHRC) for which they are eligible to remain eligible for this funding. Details about the minimum funding package are available here.
MA students are not guaranteed funding, but are eligible for a number of the below scholarships.
Please note that incoming master’s and doctoral students are eligible to apply for OGS and SSHRC awards in the fall prior to applying to the program. Please see pertinent websites for application directions.
The SGS provides information about scholarships and awards beyond those listed below and information about applying for other forms of financial assistance. Students are encouraged to visit SGS’s Financial Support webpage.
Funding opportunities may also be available through the Research Database.
