The Department of East Asian Studies at the University of Toronto invites applications for a tenure-stream position at the rank of Assistant Professor in East Asian Popular Culture, including, but not limited to, contemporary new media, internet culture, performance art, popular music and cultural studies. The appointment will begin on July 1, 2018.
Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. degree in East Asian Studies, Media Studies or a related field by the date of appointment, or soon thereafter with a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching and research. Salary to be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Candidates must provide evidence of excellence in research as demonstrated through publications or forthcoming publications in leading journals, presentations at significant conferences, and strong letters of reference from referees of high standing. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative research at the highest international level and to establish an outstanding, competitive, research program. Applicants should be able to frame their work in terms of broader theoretical questions and within wider Asian and/or global contexts.
East Asian Studies is a multidisciplinary humanities department with an extremely popular undergraduate program and a strong commitment to graduate training. The successful candidate must demonstrate excellence in teaching. Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, the statement of teaching philosophy and the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application, as well as strong letters of reference.
